As time passes and leases change, the world of hospitality in a city like New York is a continuum that provides fertile ground for rebirth built on new stages for showcasing the culinary arts. While every space that we approach for a renovation is a canvas built on the work of other designers that came before us, it is rare that we are given the opportunity to reassess one of our own designs for a new client.

The bright openness that once greeted the sidewalk of this retail storefront was changed into a world behind a curtain—or more specifically a gallery. Sidewalks of potential patrons may peer in to see a fresh exhibition of artwork on the walls, but those guided by an appetite for fine dining are guided through one of the paintings into a quiet room beyond for an evening of service and quality. Assembled around a single, central bar, meals are prepared and plated before the eyes of waiting guests. Walls that were once white passed their color to the tin on the ceiling and took to darker tones in its place. The infrastructure of cooking shifted and evolved to accommodate new staff and new dishes. Though the light fixtures changed, their placement and role of defining space remained the same—all within a rhythm of engaged beams and posts that bring cadence to a long space. The next iteration of this quiet space is part of a new experience and yet one built on a foundation of elements that are still present for those that know where to look.

Though we would wish for every one of our hospitality clients to be in business forever making a great space their home, the next best thing might be the opportunity to help aspects of our work live on for their next iteration.
